Chelsea vs FC Proto UEFA Champions League
Chelsea are poised for a first UEFA Champions League (UCL) semi-final appearance since 2014, after a 2-0 win in the first leg of this quarter-final (QF) tie. The victory extended Chelsea’s unbeaten run in the UCL to nine games (W7, D2), and marked a third straight UCL win in which they’ve won the second half 1-0 via a goal beyond the hour mark.
As a result of that victory, Chelsea have now managed to avoid defeat in each of the last six UCL knockout stage fixtures to see them score first (W3, D3). In addition, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has seen all of his three prior managerial wins attained in the second leg of a UCL knockout tie (including such a win in the previous round) yield a clean sheet.
Needing a miracle to progress, Porto have now lost five games out of their last seven against English sides, with all of those defeats seeing Porto lose by 2+ goals. In relation to that poor record, each of Porto’s last four eliminations from any European competition at the hands of English sides have come by an aggregate margin of 4+ goals.
Assuming one is needed, any late surge seems like a very remote prospect. Alarmingly for them, Porto have failed to score from open play any later than the 46th minute of regular time in their last five UCL games vs opponents from a top-five domestic European league (W2, D1, L2). Both defeats saw them concede exactly once beyond the hour mark of the 90 minutes.
Players to score: Goals from Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount in the first leg saw two different English players score for Chelsea in the same UCL match for the first time since March 2012. As for Porto, Moussa Marega has seen both of his UCL strikes this term arrive inside the first five minutes of either half.
Hot stat: Thomas Tuchel has seen all five of his previous UCL second-leg matches end by a 2+ goal margin (W3, L2).
