Chelsea vs Fulham Premier League

Following their gutsy 1-1 draw vs Real Madrid (Apr 27), Chelsea face a different type of ‘white knuckle’ ride. They are still in the sights of the top-four chasing teams that began the new week just behind them, but face a local rival against whom they boast an excellent win percentage (68%) in league H2Hs under Roman Abramovich’s ownership (2003/04-present).

In addition to being unbeaten against Fulham in 20 competitive meetings (W13, D7), Chelsea have won all London derbies (of four) played in the league in 2021 alone, the last three of which saw them consistently win the first half to-nil. Furthermore, April 2018 remains the last occasion on which Chelsea lost after scoring first in any Premier League (PL) London derby at home.

Though hoping to score first in what would be a sixth away league game (of seven) since the start of February, Fulham are (going back to Jan 2014) winless in their last 23 top-flight London derby matches (D5, L18). Fulham have also taken no points (after second halves producing under 1.5 total goals) from the last three H2Hs vs Chelsea to see them trail at HT.

Despite gaining neutral admirers in their last London derby (D1-1 v Arsenal), Fulham remain deep in relegation trouble, and based on points per-game, they are on course for just 31 – never once enough to survive in the PL. However, their projected ‘goals against’ tally (50) is a vast improvement on the eventual tally of their 2018/19 relegation season (81).

Players to score: Chelsea’s last handicap-beating London derby win saw Kai Havertz score and assist in a single league game for the first time with the club. A dangerous visitor, Josh Maja scored first in Fulham’s last derby – both of his openers this term have come between the 46th-60th minute, in away games producing exactly two goals (W1, D1).

Hot stat: Chelsea have won the possession battle by an average margin of 25% across their last ten PL home games won/drawn.

Prediction: Chelsea [2] vs [0] Fulham
