Liverpool vs Southampton Premier League

Last season’s champions Liverpool will be motivated to build upon their five-game unbeaten Premier League (PL) run (W3, D2) as they chase a top-four spot. The Merseysiders will be annoyed it wasn’t a 100% record across that aforementioned sequence, however, as they were undone in both draws by goals conceded after the 75th minute – including their latest PL goal conceded (94:58) at Anfield since at least 2006/07 last time out.

At home, it’s been the closing stages of the first period that Jürgen Klopp’s men have been most vulnerable recently, conceding three of their previous four home ‘goals against’ in between 40’-HT. Given they’ve kept just three PL home clean sheets and none across their previous eight at Anfield (W1, D1, L6), we could see a repeat here.

Southampton are on a torrid away run of just one PL victory since mid-December (W1, D2, L8), but a win here would secure their top-flight status. However, they failed to score in six of those 11 matches, and haven’t netted at Liverpool in four straight visits (D1, L3). Although to their credit they did manage a 1-1 draw vs Leicester last time out despite having a man sent off within ten minutes – the second time that’s happened this season!

A big issue for Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men has been closing out matches. They’ve conceded 14 PL away goals after the 60th minute, whilst scoring only two in response. That’s a factor in why they’ve dropped more points from winning positions than any other PL side (23).

Players to score: Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah has scored in his previous two PL home appearances, and netted two in this fixture last season – three of those combined four goals came after HT. For Southampton, James Ward-Prowse has netted the club’s second-highest number of PL goals (eight), although only one came from open play.

Hot stat: Southampton have won just four of their 43 PL away matches on Merseyside vs Everton and Liverpool (D12, L27).

Prediction: Liverpool [2] vs [2] Southampton
