Tottenham vs Southampton Premier League

Tottenham Hotspur reacted to their 2-2 Premier League (PL) draw with Everton, a result which hurt their Champions League qualification hopes, by dismissing José Mourinho. His 17-month, 86-game reign culminated in one win in his final six competitive games (D2, L3), costing him a shot at the EFL Cup final.

With no side dropping more points (20) from winning positions than Tottenham this PL campaign, there’s clear problems to address for any incoming manager. Yet despite that record, their 3-1 defeat to Manchester United (April 11) was the first time this season Tottenham have lost a home league match after scoring first (W7, D3). Their recent home games have also provided plenty of entertainment, with an average of 4.33 goals per game across their last three PL fixtures here (W2, L1).

Another high-scoring affair could ensue, particularly if Southampton, entering this clash nine points ahead of the league’s 18th-placed side, start poorly again having conceded 2+ first-half goals in three of their last four league outings. A result either way seems probable as they’ve only drawn one of their last 20 competitive matches (W7, L12) following Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final defeat.

Interestingly, each of Southampton’s away league games this calendar year saw the side scoring first prevail (W1, L7), a run during which the visitors conceded an average of 3.25 goals per game! More of the same could be in store as Southampton haven’t kept a clean sheet in a PL away H2H since January 2001 (W2, L10 since).

Players to score: With Harry Kane doubtful, Son Heung-min becomes even more key for ‘Spurs’, and after scoring four times in September’s reverse fixture, he’s netted more goals against Southampton (ten) than any other club. For the ‘Saints’, Nathan Redmond has scored three times between the 40th and 70th minute in four competitive matches.

Hot stat: Southampton lament the worst PL record of any team this calendar year (W3, D1, L11; GD: -23).

Prediction: Tottenham [4] vs [0] Southampton
